I was wondering if anyone caught what happened to Lieutenant Cupcake. The red-shirts charged out of Mudd’s ship with Kirk and Spock but weren’t around at the end of the fight. I didn’t actually see them fall though. But I also didn’t see them at all for the rest of the film.

I’m so glad this info graphic is going around, because so many people don’t realize how ageism and misogyny play hand in hand and how the sexualization of young girls play into this.

The scale here is kindof misleading, though. Clooney’s largest actual age difference is 15 years (not really a whole generation gap) and that came when he was nearly 50. My grandmother was only 36 when I was born, so 34 hardly seems “too young”. The graphs get a little worse with each actor, sure, but who actually saw any Richard Gere movies after the Diane Lane one? And even then, we are still talking about women in their mid-30s. And look at the roles situationally - in context, the ages of the Dark Shadows characters are rightfully not indicated by the ages of the actors - plus, it’s selective, choosing the younger of the two women for the sake of the graph. There’s hardly proof of “sexualization of young girls” here.

It’s odd, and it seems disturbing on the surface, but the profitability of these leading men is a capitalist thing. Audiences keep coming back for their films (for the most part), so there’s a demand for them to keep getting cast. There are also women who consistently get lead roles, and they aren’t getting any younger either. There’s just fewer of them because the data says that certain people are less marketable than others, and usually the men come out on top because that’s what the ticket sales say. It’s weird, and it would be nice if actresses tested as well as men on a regular basis (I’d say the talent pool is about even, so I don’t understand why it’s not the case), but I can’t really say there’s anything nefarious about these statistics.

I’d like to see what it says about leading ladies. I know Meryl Streep has had some younger love interests. What we could be seeing is not a disparity of gender roles, but of talent. You can afford one big lead (male or female), and then sometimes cast an untested new face as their love interest. The age gap is often happenstance.

Edit: OMG the Brad Pitt one uses Benjamin Button and HIS ACTUAL REAL LIFE WIFE. How am I supposed to take this seriously? If you’re going to omit movies, at least omit the ones where it doesn’t make any sense to consider age.
